NYU Stern MBA Essay Analysis 2023-24
NYU Stern 的題目今年跟去年一樣，第一題是 career goal essay，要以150字的 short answer 形式回答，以往的創意題，今年依舊只接受 PDF 的檔案格式。NYU Stern 目前是頂尖商學院中，少數還維持創意題的學校。
在申請的日期方面，Stern 今年依舊維持4個申請的 round（大部分商學院是3個 round ），R1申請截至日為 9月18日，R2 在10月18日，R3 則是明年的1月18日；對於其他大部分學校，我們會建議 R1 或 R2（通常是隔年一月）申請都行，但是對於 NYU Stern 這種隔年一月之前，有兩個 rounds 的學校，我們會建議申請者，儘量在前兩輪申請。而 NYU Stern 有另外兩個 MBA program，一個是 Fashion & Luxury MBA，一個是 Tech MBA，這幾年也受到不少學生青睞。
Short Answer: Professional Aspirations
(150 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
- What are your short-term career goals?
以往在第一題，學校都是請申請者回答長短程的 career goal ＋ why Stern。而去年開始，則改成只問短程職涯目標。
我建議申請者要確認你的 goal essay 清楚的點出短程目標中的產業、職能 (function)、地點（可以是美國或亞洲兩者都寫），因為還是可以寫150字，我建議申請者解釋為什麼想要做這樣的工作，甚至點到長程目標的產業別，畢竟這樣的思考邏輯比較順，比較可以讓讀者 (Adcom) 理解。
假如你畢業後想做管顧業，而長期目標是科技公司的 CEO，你需要說明畢業後能在顧問業學習到什麼，像是針對不同產業研究趨勢、分析問題的方法、建立的人脈、幫客戶解決問題的方法，可以讓你未來當執行長時，對產業趨勢有敏感度，對事業有更全面的思維。(推薦閱讀：致任職於四大事務所的你：想轉職到投資銀行、財星500大企業，MBA可以這樣幫你！）
Essay 1: Change: _________ it
(350 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
In today’s global business environment, the only constant is change. Using NYU Stern’s brand call to action, we want to know how you view change. Change: _____ it. Fill in the blank with a word of your choice. Why does this word resonate with you? How will you embrace your own personal tagline while at Stern? Examples:
- Change: Dare it.
- Change: Dream it.
- Change: Drive it.
- Change: Empower it.
- Change: Manifest it.
- Change: [Any word of your choice.]
NYU Stern 去年出了這個新題目，我建議這一題或許可以當成一個 behavioral essay 來寫，所謂 behavioral question 就是問你曾經怎麼展現某種能力，你可以舉一個工作上的大專案，展現你的領導能力、團隊合作精神，並且選擇 Change: Drive it or Empower it，如果是這樣，請你描述專案內容、參與的人員、困難度、需要領導力、團隊合作的地方。（推薦閱讀：頂尖MBA超重視「團隊合作」能力，就算essay沒問你也要用這三種方式展現出來）
這邊要特別注意的是，不建議選擇一個只能展現你「專業能力」的成就，例如如果你是科技公司研發人員，你寫自己研究出如何厲害的專利，但從頭到尾沒有和別人合作的地方，或需要溝通協調的地方，這不是商學院想要看到的成就，而且在履歷表就可以寫到這項專利，不用花一整篇 essay 來大書特書。
另外，很多學生會說，我工作經驗才三、四年，沒有當過別人的上司，應該沒辦法寫出好的 leadership example；但是，其實我協助很多錄取 M7 的學生，工作年資都只有三四年；當一些專案的負責人，或者一個大案子其中一部分的領導者，也可以展現領導力，展現你如何把一個牽涉多個部門的案子做好。
當然，這一題不見得一定要寫工作上發生的事情，如果你曾經當社團幹部，做了一些你覺得對社團成員或大眾有利的事，甚至創立一個非營利組織，都可以寫在這篇裡，並且選擇 Change: Dare it or Dream it. 形容你成就的事情如何有影響力（impact），因為頂尖商學院都對曾展現社會影響力的學生，很是重視。而我也常常舉例告訴學生，把被指派的事情做好，不算傑出，MBA 希望找的是可以主動替老闆、公司、團體想，怎麼樣可以把該做的事情做得更好，或者做大家都沒有想過，但對團體好的事情，所以無論是幫公司內部流程優化、創立什麼樣的團體、爭取沒有人想過可以爭取到的客戶，都可以是好的例子。另外，這幾年很多公司有在做數位轉型，也可以是一個好的例子。

Essay 2: Personal Expression(a.k.a. “Pick Six")
Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain all of the following elements:
- A brief introduction or overview of your “Pick Six" (no more than 3 sentences).
- Six images that help illustrate who you are.
- A one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.
Note: Your visuals may include photos, infographics, drawings, or any other images that best describe you. Your document must be uploaded as a single PDF. The essay cannot be sent in physical form or be linked to a website.
這一題也和前幾年一樣，而2018年以前的幾年，針對這一題，我滿多學生選擇用影片的方式呈現，而近年開始學校取消以影片呈現的選項，讓申請者選六張可以代表自己的照片、圖表、資訊圖表（infographic）。
越來越多學校希望申請者告訴他們，希望未來班上同學怎麼認識自己，也就是幫助 Adcom 想像，有你在班上會帶來怎樣的加分，所以你可以想像這是一個 “what are you most proud of outside of work” + “contribution” 的題目。你可以找過去做義工、課外活動、公司社團、商業競賽、個人興趣（運動、旅行等）的照片或整理的圖表/infographic，總之你可以選擇用不同的素材，描述自己各個面相，當然也有人只想講自己的一個經驗，所以用六張同一件經驗的所有素材，把某一個經驗講的深入一點，也是很好表達自己的方法。延伸閱讀：招生委員的評分六大關鍵 》錄取頂尖商學院的第一步，先了解招生委員都在想什麼）
Stern Adcom 負責人 Isser Gallogly 表示，因為 Instagram 等社群軟體越來越普及，學校也希望響應這個趨勢，用圖像輔助文字，希望申請者可以在面試前，就栩栩如生地站在 Adcom 面前介紹自己，Gallogly 也說，以往因為有些申請者花太多時間在剪輯影片上，所以才將這個題目形式做了些變動，也是希望申請者不要因為題目太廣，而不敢申請 Stern。
我很喜歡和學生腦力激盪這種創意題，因為過程中會討論到學生不曾想到，卻非常適合這題的素材，而且往往做出來的成就感很大，過程中也更認識學校、認識自己！不管如何，發揮你的創意，但千萬記得，這還是一篇申請 MBA 的 essay，因此重點在於讓學校更了解你有他們想尋找的特質，而不是單純地發揮創意。(延伸閱讀：不是一定要拯救世界，才能申請MBA！學習說個好故事，讓你脫穎而出)
2021年畢業的，從台灣去 Stern 的都是我的學生，我還記得這四個人的 Personal Expression 都截然不同；有人用照片表現她如何宣揚台灣土地人情，有人討論創業過程，有人寫各種社團活動及代表的個性⋯。所以我建議申請者不要過度在意「學校到底想看什麼？」這個問題，而是拿出自己最有特色的六個面向/活動，全力以赴！
Essay 3: Additional Information (optional)
(250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. This may include current or past gaps in employment, further explanation of your undergraduate record or self-reported academic transcript(s), plans to retake the GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment, IELTS or TOEFL, or any other relevant information.
NYU Stern 在 optional essay 這題列出好幾個須知，清楚的表明誰才需要寫 optional essay，學校不希望申請者怕沒有多寫這篇，就好像沒有申請的誠意，而硬要擠出一篇，optional essay 是給真的有需要解釋的申請者寫的，例如題目提到的工作空檔、學校成績解釋等等，等於給申請者一個機會，解釋 Adcom 從履歷或 essay 上看到會感到疑惑的事情。
EQ Endorsements
Choosing Your Endorsers
- You are required to submit two EQ Endorsements with your application.
- One EQ Endorsement must come from your current supervisor. If you cannot include an endorsement from your current supervisor, you must provide an explanation in the online application.
- The second EQ Endorsement may come from someone who knows you professionally and/or personally.
- EQ Endorsements should come from individuals who can objectively assess your potential for success in NYU Stern’s MBA program and in your future career, and who can act as a persuasive advocate of your EQ strengths.
- Immediate family members should not write your EQ endorsement.
- Submitting more than two EQ endorsements is not encouraged but is allowed. Please carefully consider whether additional endorsements add significant value and a new and unique perspective to your application.
EQ Endorsement Questions
Your endorsers will be asked to rate you on a number of abilities and qualities, as well as provide an answer to these five questions:
- Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant’s role in your organization.
- How does the applicant’s performance compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles (if applicable)? Please provide specific examples. (E.g. what are the applicant’s principal strengths?)
- Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.
- IQ+EQ is a core value of NYU Stern, and we seek exceptional individuals who possess both intellectual and interpersonal strengths. Emotional intelligence (EQ) skills such as self-awareness, empathy, communication and self-management are at the core of our community of leaders. Please provide one specific and compelling example to demonstrate the applicant’s emotional intelligence.
- (Optional) Is there anything else we should know?
Your endorsers may answer these questions in the endorsement form or by uploading a Word or PDF document. EQ endorsements must be submitted online.
除了兩封推薦信以外，Stern 從幾年前開始要求申請者找一個可以舉出申請者與 EQ 相關的事例，今年同樣要求要找一個老闆、一個朋友或同事，共兩人來舉例說明申請者有好的 EQ。學校希望申請者不是只是一個好的領導者，同時也是可以在群體間有好的人緣、在團隊合作上可以發揮同理心的好同事、好老闆。我建議這一題除了老闆以外，可以找一個不同部門的同事來寫，舉一些跨部門合作的經驗，或者可以找志工組織，或者社團成員，描述沒有利益關係時，申請者是如何圓滑地解決問題，讓事情圓滿。（延伸閱讀：學校教授、公司總經理…想出國念書，千萬別找這4種人幫你寫推薦信）
